Tranquil beaches, stunning scenic surroundings and historical heritage worth seeing. This is what awaits you if you spend a few days in Santa Cristina d'Aro, a municipality located at the southern end of the Empordà, next to Platja d'Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
Until the 19th century, Santa Cristina d'Aro was part of the core of Castell d'Aro. In 1808, however, it was segregated together with three parishes: Bell-lloc, Solius and Romanyà de la Selva. The good location of Santa Cristina, well connected with Girona or Sant Feliu de Guíxols, ended up causing it to become the capital of the municipality. The urban center grew around its church, from the 10th century.
Take a notebook, because Santa Cristina is full of essentials: At the entrance, the dolmen of the Dalma cave , the Neolithic menhir of Murtra or the Moros and Sa Tuna caves . It is also worth visiting the remains of Solius Castle , from the 15th century, the church of Santa Agnès which, although it has its origins in the 10th and 11th centuries, was demolished and rebuilt in the 18th century. Right next to it you will find the Cistercian monastery of Solius. Finally, do not hesitate to approach the church of Sant Martí de Romanyà .
If you like cycling and hiking, you're in luck. In Santa Cristina d'Aro you will find a greenway, via del Carrilet , which occupies what used to be the railway line. There are also mind-blowing itineraries in terms of scenery, such as the route that connects Platja d'Aro and Romanyà de la Selva and passes through Santa Cristina or the one that goes to the Salenys gorges natural site. And, of course, if you want to enjoy the sea, you will find quiet and quite unspoilt coves such as Senyor Ramon or Vallpresona .
