Do you like cycling and are you looking for a quiet and charming rural getaway? Towards Sant Mori there is a shortage of people! This small town in Alt Empordà, which barely has 200 inhabitants, preserves an architectural heritage that makes it unique compared to other municipalities in the area. In addition, it has an equestrian center nearby to be able to go on horseback. Another way to get to know the Empordà.
Sant Mori is made up of two centers built on two neighboring hills: the old center or district of the Castle and the extramuros or district of the Puig. The first originated around the castle of Sant Mori and the first parish church of Sant Maurici. It is a complex of medieval origin that was originally surrounded by a wall of which some vestiges are preserved, on the north and south sides of the area. It is in this neighborhood where we find some of the most interesting heritage elements, such as Sant Mori Castle (15th century) - a Gothic-Renaissance palace -, the church of Sant Maurici (18th century) and houses from the 17th and 18th centuries , many built on the old walls. A historical anecdote: During the Catalan Civil War, the queen regent Joana Enríquez and her son, the infante Ferdinand (who would become Ferdinand II the Catholic), spent a few days in Sant Mori castle.
Without a doubt, one of the essential things to do in Sant Mori is a walk through its historic center, both through the old quarter and the one outside the walls. You cannot miss the Renaissance and Baroque church of Sant Maurici, included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, the castle of Sant Mori, a large Renaissance palace turned today into a luxury hotel and declared a cultural asset of national interest and, finally, the church of Sant Julià, a small pre-Romanesque temple.
Sant Mori is an ideal town to get to know the Alt Empordà on foot. You can get close to the Fluvià river crossing, where some pronounced meanders are drawn, go to the neighboring town, Sant Miquel de Fluvià, passing through Garrigàs or to Les Olives. Another option is to get closer to Sant Martí d'Empúries and visit the remains of the Greek settlement .
