At the southern end of Garrotxa, right on the border with Gironès and Selva, we find Sant Aniol de Finestres. A town surrounded by mountains and a wooded landscape. It includes the nucleus of Sant Aniol, which was the historical germ, that of Barroca and that of Sant Esteve de Llémena, the current seat of the municipal government.
The castle of Finestres appears documented for the first time in 947. In the 14th century, the domains of the castle, under the barony of Santa Pau, included the parishes of Sant Aniol, Santa Maria, Sant Esteve de Llémena, Sant Andreu de Sobre-roca, Santa Maria de Santa Pau and the Medes. During the wars of the Remences, in the 15th century, Finestres Castle was an important center of operations for the peasants who rose up against the feudal lords.
If you spend a few days in Sant Aniol de Finestres you cannot miss the church which, although it has undergone several modifications throughout history, retains the Romanesque apse. It is also worth visiting the one of Sant Esteve , in Sant Esteve de Llémena, built in the 17th century. To the north of the municipality, and at the top of the Serra de Finestres, there is the church of Santa Maria de Finestres , originally from the middle of the 10th century. However, one of the most beautiful churches in Sant Aniol de Finestres is that of Sant Miquel of Bustins.
If you want to enjoy the wooded landscape, you can follow some of the routes signposted by the village, such as the one that goes to the Castle of Finestres or the one that starts from Sant Aniol to Sant Miquel de Bustins. You can also approach the church of Santa Maria de Finestres, from where you will have spectacular views or take one of the most popular routes, the one that goes from Sant Esteve de Llémena to Sant Cebrià.
