The fishing town par excellence. One of the most popular tourist destinations on the Costa Brava, known for its beaches, famous prawns and the medieval aftertaste of its old town. This is Palamós, one of the large municipalities of Baix Empordà.

The history of Palamós and its surroundings

The origins of the municipality can be found between 2100 and 1500 BC, the date of the Montagut dolmen, the first evidence of human settlement in the area. Although there is also evidence that there was an Iberian settlement near the Castell beach. Centuries later, in 1277, King Peter II the Great acquired the castle of Sant Esteve and named the town a royal port. Since then, Palamós has always occupied a pre-eminent place as a strategic port and a first-rate fortified settlement.

Get to know its architectural heritage

Palamós is full of essentials. At the entrance, the archaeological remains of Iberian origin , on Castell beach or the medieval castle of Sant Esteve , on La Fosca beach, today very much in ruins. Above the sanctuary of Bell-lloc you will find the castle of Vila-romà , a fortified construction of Visigoth origin. If you're walking around the town, it's worth visiting one of its emblematic squares, such as Plaça Murada, which offers great views of the bay, or Plaça del Pedró, from which you'll have a great view of the marina. And if you want to know the history of seafaring life, don't miss the Fishing Museum .

Enjoy its beaches

The range of beaches in Palamós is the widest. At the entrance, you will find sandy and warm beaches, ideal for the whole family, such as Platja Gran, but also quieter beaches such as the Margarida or S'Alguer coves. You also have the possibility to approach the port and rent a boat to take a route inland. If you prefer the mountains, in the Gavarres massif you will find several fantastic itineraries to explore on foot or by bike.
