The history of Lluçanès dates back to the 9th century, specifically with the construction of Lluçà Castle. It is located on a plateau and is bordered by counties such as Osona, Berguedà or Bages. Its capital is Prats del Lluçanès. In 2023, after centuries of vindication, it has been recognized as an official region of Catalunya.
The long historical tradition of Lluçanès means that there is an important architectural heritage throughout its territory. Its medieval complexes with numerous hermitages, sanctuaries and monasteries stand out. On the other hand, popular traditions are deeply rooted in their towns. There are many routes you can take that will allow you to discover unique corners full of magic and mystery.
Natural spaces are also very important. Many of its itineraries and hiking routes are signposted and you can do them both on foot and by bike. The range of activities to do with the family is numerous and suitable for all tastes and ages.
Lluçanès' location allows you to enjoy extraordinary views of such emblematic places as Montserrat mountain, Montseny, the Pedraforca massif or the Pyrenees. One of the most important viewpoints can be found at Lluçà Castle. It is a 360º viewpoint from which you can see much of Lluçanès, Cadí, the Eastern Pyrenees, Collsacabra or Montserrat. In Sant Boi de Lluçanès is the viewpoint of Sant Salvador de Bellver. From here you will have a beautiful panoramic view of the Plana de Vic, Turó de l'Home, Tavertet or Montsent.
Other viewpoints we recommend are Perafita Park, Sant Adjutori in Olost, Serrat de les Forques in Sant Feliu Sasserra or de la Serra in Alpens. Don't forget to bring binoculars to enjoy the scenery!
Lluçanès is a territory where you will find legends, magic and a whole series of characters such as witches or demons that are part of the collective imagination. Walking through its towns you will learn about ancient facts and beliefs that are part of the region's cultural heritage.
In Sant Feliu Sasserra is the Bruixeria Interpretation Centre, a space dedicated to witches and healers as well as their customs and the persecutions they have suffered. In the same municipality is the viewpoint of Serrat de les Forques, a place with spectacular panoramic views and where the last Catalan witches were hanged. In Lluça there is the Fountain and Balma dels Bous, a point where witches used to gather.
Lluçanès stands out for having an important historical heritage. Its chapels and churches are a clear vestige of Romanesque art. Walking through the streets of its towns you will be able to admire buildings full of history and at the same time you will have the feeling that you are traveling back in time.
In Oristà is the crypt of Sant Andreu d'Oristà. It is an old Romanesque church that is on a lower level of the new neoclassical style church. On the other hand, in Lluçà is the Monastery of Lluçà, a first-rate medieval complex. Another very interesting building is the church of Sant Pere de Serrallonga in the Alpens. A 9th century construction that has a unique style.
If you like mountain biking, in Lluçanès you will find numerous paths and trails to travel and which will allow you to discover a territory full of cliffs, balms and forests. One of the most popular routes is the one that crosses El Sorreigs in Sant Boi de Lluçanès. Throughout the route you will be able to see old mills, fountains and brooks as well as a wide variety of animal and plant species. From Prats de Lluçanès you can take an itinerary that passes through the Cadira de Galceran and allows you to enjoy the Vall de Merlès or the Romanesque church of Sant Andreu de Llanars.
Lluçanès stands out for having abundant water resources. Its streams, springs and swamps allow you to enjoy a unique river landscape where you can do activities such as fishing or hiking. One of the best-known places in the region is the Rexach Swamp in Olost. It is a space of great beauty where you will see a great diversity of animal species. In Sant Boi de Lluçanès you will find the Font de la Prada, a place with abundant vegetation and high quality water. On the other hand, in Sant Bartomeu del Grau 800 meters above sea level is the Font del Vicari, a point of great scenic interest.
The natural heritage of Lluçanès is one of the most important in Catalonia. Many of its municipalities have centuries-old trees that are listed as natural monuments . In Sant Boi de Lluçanès is the Roure de la Senyora, a tree with a long history and great majesty. On the other hand, in the municipality of Lluçà, there is the Alzina Gran del Vilaró. An oak tree that is at the foot of a forest track and very close to the Monastery of Lluçà.
Lluçanès produces high quality milk and cheese. Their farms work with local milk obtained from sheep, cows and goats that graze all over their fields. On this route you will be able to learn how the entire manufacturing process takes place and taste some of their products.
You can start the route by visiting Mas Casanova de Lluçà, where you can learn from the producer all the secrets of pasture and exploitation of alpine goats. In Prats del Lluçanès is the Soler de n'Hug. Here you will discover how the process of exploiting cow farms is developed and taste the artisan yogurts and desserts made precisely with the milk of their cows.
Can you imagine visiting an Escape Room dedicated to the figure of a bandit? Well, precisely in Olost is the Escape Room - Perot Rocaguinarda. A space dedicated to the legendary Lluçanès bandit and where you can discover the story of this historical figure through games and clues and riddles. Without a doubt, an experience that is worth having as a family and that you will surely love.
One of the main attractions of Lluçanès is that most of its municipalities still retain their rural image. Walking through its entire territory you will see a landscape that invites calm and reflection. There are many routes that you can take with the family and that will allow you to discover unique places.
One of the best-known itineraries is the one that leaves Sant Boi de Lluçanès and goes up to the Munts sanctuary, from where you can enjoy splendid views of the Lluçanès. Don't forget to visit Oristà, Perafita or Alpens either. Villages that have an important natural and cultural heritage.
The gastronomy of Lluçanès stands out for its contrast of flavours. Without a doubt, lamb is one of its star dishes. Mushrooms, truffles and aromatic herbs are other essential ingredients of Luçan cuisine. Artisanal products such as wood-fired bread, cakes, sausages or cheeses also have great culinary relevance.
