An area of natural contrasts. This is La Vall d'en Bas, a town created in 1968 and located south of Olot. An ideal town for lovers of active tourism.
The toponym appears for the first time in 872. The plain of Bas, which included Sant Esteve and Sant Privat d'en Bas, Ridaura, Olot, Puigpardines, Sant Julià de Cabrera, Falgars d'en Bas, Les Preses, Joanetes, La Pinya, Sant Joan dels Balbs, Sant Andreu del Coll, Finestres, Rupit and Castelló d'en Bas, was the center of the domains of the Viscounts of Besalú . With the disappearance of the county of Besalú, in the twelfth century, the viscounty adopted the name of Bas. The most outstanding historical episode is when, in 1695, during the Nine Years' War, a French column was defeated by the miquelets of the region.
If you spend a few days in La Vall d'en Bas, you can't miss the village of Sant Privat d'en Bas and its medieval center around the parish. It is also worth visiting the Romanesque church of Sant Privat and, above all, the sanctuary of the Virgin of les Olletes , excavated in the rock in 1855, on the cliffs of les Olletes. In the town of Castelló d'en Bas stand the remains of the viscounts' castles, from the year 1066, of which only part of the wall, the cistern and the chapel of Sant Miquel de Falgars, today converted into a sanctuary, remain. Finally, you can't forget to visit Hostalets d'en Bas, declared a Historicoartistic complex, which was born around the old road from Vic to Olot during the 18th century. If you like history, remember that near Mallol there is the mas de Verntallat, formerly the home of the family of Francesc Verntallat, the Remença chieftain who was appointed Viscount of Hostoles by King Joan II. The farmhouse has a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.
If you like to cycle, it is worth taking the cycle path that connects Olot with Girona along an old railway line. If what you want is to walk for a while, you can approach Puigpardines and go towards Sant Antoni or Fontanils. Two routes where you will enjoy fantastic views. The route from Coromina to the hermitage of Sant Miquel is also worthwhile. And if you want higher-level excursions, don't forget the Puigsacalm!
