The Vall de Bianya is an extensive municipality located, for the most part, within the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, which includes two large valleys: the Bianya and the Bac. The area, made up of eleven population centers, hides more than fifteen small Romanesque churches that are worth seeing.
The Romans left their mark on La Vall de Bianya: The Via Romana de Capsacosta, a link of the Via Augusta that demonstrates the strategic importance of the area. From the Middle Ages, when the territory was part of the county of Besalú, we find about fifteen Romanesque churches. Finally, it is worth noting that the earthquakes of 1427 and 1428 greatly affected the Vall de Bianya, a fact that is still recognizable in the Romanesque churches of the area, which suffered a lot of damage.
If you spend a few days in La Vall de Bianya, you can't miss the Capsacosta Roman road . An old secondary road that connected with the Via Augusta and that currently connects the Vall de Bianya with Sant Pau de Segúries. It is also worth visiting the fifteen Romanesque churches that you will find scattered around the area. At the entrance, in La Vall de Bianya you can visit the complex of church, rectory and cemetery of Santa Margarida de Bianya . Also the church of Sant Martí de Solamal , a 12th century building with only one nave. Or the hermitage of Sant Ponç d'Aulina , which preserves remains of Romanesque paintings in the window.
The best way to get to know La Vall de Bianya is, without a doubt, by walking. One of the most popular itineraries is the Via Romana de Capsacosta , a journey that lasts just over an hour and goes from Sant Pau de Segúries to the Vall de Bianya campsite. You can also choose to walk and make excursions through La Vall d'en Bac, a more mountainous and unspoilt area.
