El Mallol is a town in the municipality of Vall d'en Bas located to the left of the Gurn river, which extends to the slopes of a hill on which we find the ruins of the ancient medieval castle of Mallol, which was the residence of the Viscounts of Bas. The town of El Mallol grew and was enclosed within walls during the 14th century to defend the population, largely devoted to the trades of blacksmith, carpenter, tailor, etc. It also had the administrative curia, the justice system and the Casa del Verguer , which functioned as a prison until the end of the 19th century. There have been references to the castle since 1204.
