One of the most beautiful towns in Catalonia. This is Castellfollit de la Roca, the gateway to the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park and a magnificent natural viewpoint. Castellfollit, however, is best known because it is located on top of a basaltic cliff.
The first references to Castellfollit de la Roca appear at the end of the 11th century, when it belonged to the Viscounty of Bas, a feudal jurisdiction within the county of Besalú. At the end of the War of the Reapers, in 1657, the Battle of Castellfollit took place, when the French troops besieging the castle of Castellfollit were defeated. A castle that, a few years later, during the Nine Years' War was demolished. During the War of Succession (1700-1714) there was also fighting near the town.
If you're staying in a holiday cottage in Castellfollit de la Roca, it's worth taking a walk around the old quarter of the town, made up of squares and narrow streets of medieval origin. You can also approach the church of Sant Salvador , from the 13th century, which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. A fact that caused the inhabitants to build a new one in the most modern part of the town. Another option is to visit the Sausage Museum , which also has a shop. Finally, you can't forget to contemplate the panorama from Josep Pla square .
Castellfollit de la Roca is the starting point for many routes and walks. Near the town, for example, you will find a set of small gardens surrounded by a lot of paths that are part of the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone . Routes and paths that allow us to discover the basalt wall. Another route, also signposted, goes around the town along the old road to Plaça de Sant Roc.
