The Espinelves fir tree fair
Christmas is approaching, and one of the great protagonists that will adorn our homes will be the decorated Christmas tree. In Espinelves, from 30 November to 8 December, the Fira de l'Avet is held, a good technical stop on the way back from one of our houses if you pass by the Eix road, as it is only 84 km away from Barcelona, 21 from Vic and 45 from the Costa Brava.
Just 30 minutes from some of our houses, Espinelves is a village in the Osona region, but belonging to the province of Girona. It is popular for its natural surroundings, its Romanesque church and its peculiar specialty in Christmas trees.
Espinelves is located at an altitude of 750m, in the largest forest in Catalonia, in the Montseny-Guilleries area, between the Coll de Revell and the Coll del Bruc. Surrounded by silent forests, full of peace and quiet, where the scenery is worthy of admiration.
One of its most characteristic annual festivals is the Fir Fair. It dates back to 1981, and it exhibits the different varieties of firs grown in Espinelves (especially the Avet Joanis and the Pica Excelsa), so that visitors can purchase them and then decorate as a tree. Christmas. Nowadays, however, you can also find a wide variety of natural and artisanal products, different from those normally found in shops. You can also enjoy the different exhibitions (of medicinal herbs, painting, bonsai, tapestries, ceramics, miniature houses or utensils, sculptures, etc.) and the shows that take place daily at the fair.
The Espinelves stream, fed by springs and torrents, is an ideal place to fish. Espinelves is a cozy village, provided with all necessary services, where people are friendly, simple and communicative.
All this makes Espinelves a privileged place, a nativity scene village during the Fir fair, where you can walk warm while smelling the burning wood of the fireplaces.
