As a curiosity you should know that Tivenys comes from the Arabic word Tibbs al-hànash which means land of snakes. Some remains of pottery and amphorae have been found, indicating the presence of Phoenician or Greek settlements.

Its location near the Ebre and the mountain allows you to enjoy many outdoor activities. You have numerous paths on which you can make routes on foot or by bicycle. You can also take advantage and visit some of its most emblematic monuments. The assud stands out, an engineering work that comes from the Arab era.

The assud, a marvel of engineering

The assud is one of the most important constructions in Tivenys. It is a containment rush that improves the irrigation of crop fields. The first construction dates from the 11th century and was built by the Arabs. Subsequently, it has been improved and has been declared a Cultural Property of National Interest.

Visit its historic buildings

Taking a walk through the streets of Tivenys is taking a trip back in time. After the Arab expulsion it passed into the hands of the Templars. As a sign of its passage you can see buildings such as the Casa Convent or two watchtowers. The Som tower retains part of its foundations and offers truly spectacular panoramic views of the Ebre. The parish church was built in the 18th century and combines a neoclassical exterior with a Gothic interior. It is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Benedict.
