What you need to know if you come to a holiday cottage in Sunyer
The origin of the municipality takes place in
Saracen and Christian times, specifically when
Ramon de Cervera received the land as a reward for his participation in the reconquest. In 1218, he sold them to
Arnau de Sanaüja, who later passed them on to the
Sescomes family. It wasn't until the 15th century that the territory became part of the chapter of
Lleida, where it remained until the abolition of feudalism.
What can you see in Sunyer if you spend a few days in a holiday cottage
Without a doubt, the jewel of Sunyer is the Church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary , a transition from Romanesque to Gothic. This monument is protected as a cultural asset of local interest and signs of previous terraced buildings can be seen on its walls. It is a private church, since the door that leads to the square is not the original one. On the north wall, on the other hand, the original door of the temple, one of the most beautiful in Segrià, is preserved, enclosed and half mutilated by the two chapels.
If you walk along Carrer Major, you will discover some of the oldest houses in the town such as Cal Beà and Cal Gort , both from the 18th century.
At the top of the hill, when the day is clear and there is no fog, you will have wonderful views of the Segrià and you will be able to see two water reservoirs . In this place, there had also been the town's castle , the stones of which were used to build some houses in the town.
A good alternative plan for the more curious is to visit the Museum of Field Tools in Sunyer where you can find more than two hundred objects related to the rural world. Check the timetables on the town hall's website.
Things to do in and around Sunyer
Sunyer is surrounded by archaeological sites . Some of them are Serra del Tort, Riuet, Serra de Bogues, Serra de les Vinyes or Quatre Alcaldes, where remains of ceramics and flint have been found. In Tossal del Senyor , on the other hand, remains of a Roman town have been discovered.
Part of the territory of Sunyer belongs to the Protected Natural Area of Utxesa , a combination of steppe and humid landscape that has favored the development of an ideal habitat for observing birds and vegetation. The space is equipped with observatories, picnic tables and is very pleasant to walk around and spend the day there.
