In the past, Malgrat de Mar was known as Vilanova de Palafolls. Its main economic activities have been maritime trade and agriculture. However, its natural environment and its beaches have meant that tourism has grown progressively.
If you walk through the historic center you can see very interesting buildings such as the castle park, from where you can enjoy exceptional views of the whole town. The City Hall building is modernist. You must also see the Cooperative building. In the past, it was a stately home, but it has also been a blood hospital, a casino and is currently home to the Popular Library.
Gastronomy is also very important in the town. The restaurants serving traditional Catalan cuisine stand out. One of the star ingredients in her kitchen are the crocheted beans. In fact, every year gastronomic days are held where you can taste some of its varieties.
One of the main attractions of Malgrat de Mar are its beaches. In total there are seven kilometers of sand that are divided into different sectors. One of the best-known beaches is that of Astillero. If you want to swim while observing agricultural spaces then you have to go to Pla De Grau beach.
If you're looking for natural spaces, in Malgrat de Mar you'll find the Can Campassol park, a space full of green areas and fun for the lazy. Don't forget to take a route up to the hill of Serra to enjoy good views of the sea.
