Do you want to spend a quiet and rural stay in the Baix Empordà? And cross the river Ter? Towards Jafre there is a lack of people! A small town located in the north-west of the Baix Empordà, very close to Verges, and known for the annealing of cloth and the goat's yoghurts of Làctics Pauet , a company in the municipality.
Jafre is mentioned, for the first time, in the year 983. Although its castle is not mentioned until the year 1228. It is known that, during the Middle Ages, the town was part of the monastery of Banyoles, in the abbot of Amer, in the monastery of Sant Miquel de Cruïlles and, finally, in the barony and batllia of Verges. From the castle, by the way, arose a lordly lineage which, although lost in the 16th century, was preserved in the compound surname of Marimon-Jafre. Among the most recognized characters, we should highlight Aleix de Marimon-Jafre, captain of the castle of Sales and spokesman for the governor general of Catalonia in the 17th century.
Jafre, despite its small size, is full of must-sees. At the entrance, you cannot miss the sanctuary of Our Lady of Gràcia de la Fontsanta , built in the 15th century. It was articulated, by the way, next to a source to which miraculous properties were attributed. If you walk through the center of the town, you will be able to see the church of Sant Martí , from the 18th century, built using the walls of the old castle. Only the vestiges of a wall perpendicular to the church remain of the old castle. Very close to the church, you can admire Can Pou and Can Ric , two manor houses built between the 17th and 18th centuries. It is also worth seeing the chapel of Sant Antoni , from the 17th century, which served as a refuge.
You can also take advantage of your stay in Jafre to do, on foot, by bike or by kayak, the Ter route, created by the Ter Consortium, which links the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean. As you pass through the town, you will be able to see mills and irrigation canals. One of the most interesting sections is that of Avall Island, a meander of the Ter where there are riparian forests. You can also navigate along several sections of the river, between Sobrànigues, Colomers, Jafre, Verges, Sant Julià de Ramis, Celrà and Flaçà. You will find kayaks, canoes and paddle surfboards in Colomers.
