In the past, Catllar was part of the territories ceded by the Count of
Barcelona in 1066. Subsequently, it changed hands until the end of the manorial rights. It has also been immersed in several wars such as the Catalan Civil War between the years 1462-1472 or the War of the Reapers.
This long history is reflected in the historical heritage of the municipality. El Catllar also offers
the possibility of walking or cycling where you can enjoy splendid views of the town. There are a lot of historical monuments
such as the castle of the town. Currently, only the two rectangular towers and the wall that joins them remain standing. You must also visit
l'Església de San Joan Baptista , which dates back to 1776. If you like ancient history, then
you must see Els Vinyets , where Paleolithic remains have been found.
El Catllar belongs to Gaià. A place where medieval castles abound. You can take advantage and make a route
through the different castles starting with Catllar and then see Altafulla, Tamarit or Aiguamúrcia . Many are in a good state of conservation and have become leisure spaces that you can visit.
The holidays are a good time to do the different hiking routes offered by el Catllar. Some of the most important are the Alts de la Bassa Closa route . A route where you can see old farmhouses and cultivated fields. Another route we recommend is that of the Conca del Gaià . You will pass through pine forests and vineyards. When you arrive at the Gaià reservoir you will be able to see many native bird species in the area.
