Located a few kilometers from the Costa Brava and the Sierra de les Gavarres, Cassà de la Selva preserves an important monumental and industrial heritage linked to the cork industry. A fantastic municipality for active and cultural tourism.
In Cassà de la Selva, remains have been found that indicate different periods of settlement from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iberian (such as the Puig del Castell site) and Roman times. In the Middle Ages, the center of the population began to be built around the sacre of a Romanesque temple located in the same place as the current parish church. In the middle of the 19th century, the cork industry became the engine of Cassà de la Selva's demographic and economic expansion.
If you spend a few days in Cassà de la Selva, you cannot miss the important architectural ensemble built between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, coinciding with the golden age of cork manufacturing. Of these centuries-old buildings, it is worth visiting, for example, the Casa del Gas , a notable modernist example of industrial architecture, the Recreation Center , the Sala Galà or Can Trinxeria , in Plaça de la Coma. Within the urban core, the Gothic church of Sant Martí, from the 16th century, the medieval complex of Can Frigola and the Torre Salvana should be highlighted. In Cassà de la Selva, by the way, you will also find different unique hydraulic elements: an irrigation system based on a water dam from the stream, five aqueducts, a reservoir and some wells with their pipes.
Another way to get to know Cassà de la Selva is through the cork route , a guided tour that starts at the old Carrilet station, the small train line inaugurated in 1892 to boost the cork industry and which connected Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Llagostera and Cassà with Girona station. You can also take advantage of spending a few days in Cassà de la Selva to get to know the Gavarres massif.
