In the upper valley of the Llobregat, at the gates of the Pre-Pyrenees, we find the town of Berga, the capital of Berguedà, internationally known for the Patum festival. A city full of history and cultural attractions that, at the same time, allows us to discover and tour the mountains of the central Catalan Pyrenees, such as the Serra de Queralt.
The urban center of Berga was born in the 12th century, when the walls of which we still find remains today were built and which, at that time, closed a perimeter that remained practically unchanged until the end of the 19th century. The appearance of the old part of the city, however, has been shaped based on the numerous military conflicts in which it has been immersed: from the War of the Reapers, which destroyed a large part of the town, to in the Carline Wars. The city did not begin to recover until industrialization began.
If what you like is visiting churches and castles, touring the old town and discovering new museums, you're in luck. Beyond the Regional Museum, where you can get to know the city in a different way, you cannot miss the Chapel of Piety (the oldest in the town), the Sant Ferran Castle, which has been declared a cultural interest, and, above all, the Sanctuary of Queralt, known as the balcony of Catalonia.
If you stay in a holiday cottages in Berga, you can take the opportunity to practice countless sports. It is, in fact, an ideal tourist destination for families and sports fans who want to practice hiking, climbing, paragliding, skiing during the winter in the Rasos de Peguera or, simply, take the mountain bike and discover the mountains of the Pre-Pyrenees.
If you visit Berga during the week of Corpus Christi, you can't miss the Patum, the quintessential Berguedans' festival. A traditional and popular party full of fire, pyrotechnics, music and dance with resonances of medieval street theater and pagan rituals. A celebration with more than six hundred years of history that was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
