Little historical notes from Sudanell
The town is of
Saracen origin and was established when houses began to be built around the church of Sant Pere. It was in the 14th century when King Pere III sold it to the
order of the Hospitallers , who kept it in their power until the feudal era. This is how Sudanell became one of the main towns of the Hospitallers of
Lleida.
During the 18th century, curiously enough, Sudanell prospered greatly with the
cultivation of silkworms, due to the mulberry plantations around the rivers, and in 1794, it benefited from irrigation, thanks to the restoration of the
Lleida Drainage Board. What you can visit if you book a holiday cottage in Sudanell
It is clear that the
Parish Church of Sant Pere is the main architectural element of the town. Initially, there was a Romanesque church, although the one we see now is of the Baroque style, from the 18th century. It is also very interesting to walk through the old town to identify the oldest and stately houses that are preserved there such as
Cal Elvireta or
Cal Patet from the 16th century.
Next to the church, you can find the
town's Terme Cross , although the original is kept in the town hall. It is of Gothic style and in it you can see Saint John the Baptist with a cross of the order of the Hospitallers.
And if you come to Sudanell, you can't miss the
Pont de les Cinco Boqueres , one of the most peculiar in the region. The
Seròs Canal was built in 1914. This canal collects the waters of the Segre River in Lleida and leads them to the Utxesa marsh. After using the water to generate electricity, irrigate and maintain the municipalities, the canal returns the water to the river before reaching Seròs. Having said that, the Pont de les Cinco Boqueres was built to bridge the Rio Set with the characteristic that the water of the canal passes over the bridge, while the pedestrians and the Rio Set pass below. It receives the name of the five mouths because the canal is supported by five half-point arcades on cement pillars, below which and through the arches pass the river Set and the pedestrians.

Sudanell's route par excellence is the one that skirts the
Canal de Seròs , but one of the most interesting is the one that takes you to the
medieval Necropolis of Lo Muladar , one kilometer from the town in the direction of
Torres de Segre. The Necropolis consists of five rows of tombs dug into the rock (38 tombs in total) and oriented with the feet to the east and the head to the west. Currently, there are only 5 and two half lots left, as there was a gravel pit in the same place and they were damaged. Despite their deterioration, when you go, look for a photograph of what they looked like, as the scenery was breathtaking.
If you decide to rent a country house in June, Sudanell hosts the
Sudanell Music Festival , which includes numerous activities for all ages, a good representation of national music and of course, the best meals in the region.
