The origins of the villages of Ribera d'Ondara go back to the Middle Ages and they developed under their castles, which changed hands throughout history.
The episode of the Battle of Rubinat on July 1462 stands out, a battle fought around the castle of Rubinat at the beginning of the war against John II.
If you visit the different population centers that make up the municipality, you will discover many vestiges of the Middle Ages as well as the remains of the castles that presided over the towns. Although most of them are in a bad state, you can still appreciate parts that corresponded to the walls and the rampart.
Ribera d'Ondara is home to many Romanesque churches that have preserved their original elements. Highlights include the Church of Sant Antolí , Sant Pau de Narbonne a Pomar (with its double-eyed bell tower), Santa Maria de Montlleó , Sant Jaume de Montpalau (which preserves a sarcophagus from the 14th century) , Sant Pere dels Arquells (with a bell tower located above the apse) and that of Santa Maria de Rubinat , which stands out for its exclusive Lombard-style bell tower.
If you pass through Gramuntell, visit its 13th and 15th century houses Cal Roig and Cal Lluelles and in La Sisquella, you will find Mas Nuix (1480).
On the contrary, Montpalau preserves a good part of the urban structure of the medieval period; the town retains a good number of arches and vaults that go through the houses and allow you to enter the inner alleys. This structure was shared by many towns after the reconquest, which were articulated as a closed fortified nucleus, where the houses acted as a wall around the castle or strong house.
From the 17th and 18th centuries there are some wonderful farmhouses such as Mas Claret or Mas d'en Toni , Cal Vidal in Montpalau, Ca l'Alió in Sant Pere d'Arquell or Cal Colom in Llindars
From this very special place, you can complete stage ES24a13a of the Camino de Sant Jaume , which runs from Igualada to Cervera, passing through Sant Antolí and Vilanova, Els Hostalets and Sant Pere dels Arquells. If you stop at the church of Sant Jaume in Pallarols , you will find a stamp point for the pilgrim's card.
