Origins of Montoliu de Lleida. Prepare your getaway in a holiday cottage!
Montoliu de Lleida, like many other towns in Segrià, has its origins in the reconquest. It was
Ramon Berenguer IV who granted the lands to
Pere de Montoliu , one of the knights of La
Segarra who had helped him expel the Saracens. During the Middle Ages, Pere de Montoliu and his descendants gave land to the see and bishops of Lleida and in 1213, Pere I the Catholic gave the
Montoliu castle to the church of Lleida.
The arrival of water in the municipality was during the 18th century with the
Fontanet irrigation canals and the Torres drain and at the beginning of the 20th century, it benefited from the
last section of the Urgell canal .
What to discover in Montoliu de Lleida
If you take a walk through the
center of town , take a good look at the houses because there are a few from the s.
XVIII that still preserve a portal under a stone arch. The
Parish Church of the Nativity of Our Lady is a baroque style temple that is well worth visiting, if we take into account that old stones from the castle were used for its construction.
It is very interesting to visit
Pla de Tabac , a Bronze Age settlement in the plain of Lleida.
On the outskirts of Montoliu de Lleida, two
smokehouses remain standing. One of them is in the middle of a fruit field and belonged to an oil mill, which was part of the facilities of a company in Les
Garrigues, Olis Giu. This mill used canal water to produce steam and run the machines.

Without a doubt, the emblematic place of Montoliu de Lleida is the
Pamolls de Montoliu . Where the Urgell canal ends, there is a forest on the left bank of the Segre river with an area of about 20 hectares. The forest is mainly made up of
poplars, poplars, ash trees, white willows and alder trees . In some sectors
elm and tamarisk trees predominate. An extensive
reedbed has formed on the edge of the adjacent agricultural area. It is an ideal place to walk, identify the vegetation and discover the different
species of birds that live there.
If you want a walking or cycling route, you can take the path that crosses the Segre and leads to the
Aiguamolls de Rufea or the
