Massoteres, a town full of history to spend a few days in a holiday cottage
The municipality of Massoteres has less than 300 inhabitants, but its history goes back more than 900 years. Massoteres appears documented in the year 1040 in the county of
Urgell, forming part of the demarcation of the castle of Talteüll, and in the 11th century it is recorded that Santa Maria de
Solsona had vassals there and received tithes.
Documentation is lacking and the origins of the population are not fully known. The oldest part of the town is built on the living rock. Massoteres is a good example to distinguish the two construction phases of the closed core; a first surrounding a castle or fort and a second, in this case from the 18th century, looking for the first. Although nothing remains of the Massoteres castle, it appears documented in 1040.
What you can see in Massoteres from your holiday cottage
The historic center of the village preserves the structure of a
medieval closed town ; although nothing remains of its castle, under which the town was distributed, one of the entrances to the old wall, the
Portal de la Vila , still remains. The main street is practically circular and the other annexes are short and often closed. The
Church of Sant Salvador , in an austere Baroque style of the 18th century, presides over the architectural ensemble. The stately houses of the old rebel town tell of the town's joyful past and some still retain their heraldic coats of arms such as
Cal Soler, Cal Pintor, Cal Sinent and Cal Clavilló . Cal Soler was the first house in the town and despite its successive reforms and its Renaissance elements, it still retains the original appearance of a
medieval strong house with defensive architectural elements such as the barbican in the corner and the loopholes.
Two kilometers north of Massoteres, we find the
Ermita de la Mare de Déu de Camp-Real , a construction documented as early as 1040, isolated and surrounded by agricultural fields.
What you can do in Massoteres during your stay in a holiday cottage
Within the territory of Massoteres there are several
farmhouses such as those of
Cabanes and la Torreta or Camp-Real, which are still inhabited, and those of Corrudella, Cal Farell and Secanell, the latter completely abandoned. Also, scattered throughout the municipal area you can find
side walls and cabins .
It is very interesting to ask for information from the municipality's town hall to follow one of the routes in this territory and it goes through the towns that were under the control of the castle of Talteüll. There is the
Palouet to Talteüll route and the
Palouet swamp route , a good route to do with the family, among many others.
