About the history of Massalcoreig
There is evidence that Massalcoreig had already been inhabited before the Middle Ages, since
Bronze Age sites have been found such as those of
the Bellavista tossal, the Benito tossal and the Torre dels Budells . Also, signs of the Roman Empire have been found in the
Roman town of Les Torrasses .
In 1181, Alfonso II The Cast allowed the
Templars to build a
mill using the old Arab ditch and in 1213, the
Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria d'Escarp was founded, inhabited until 1835.
During the Middle Ages, the town changed hands several times, belonging during the 15th century to the
Barony of Aitona , during the 17th century to the Monastery of Santa Maria and returning in 1730 to the Barony of Aitona , then converted into a marquisate.
