Although the first written references to the Riba are from the 12th century, remains of Paleolithic and Neolithic populations have been found in the Cartanyà and Gralles caves. In Roman times, the Via Aurèlia passed through its territory, one of the main axes of communication from Tarraco to the center of Catalunya.
If you walk through its old town, you can see buildings such as the church of Sant Nicolau. A neoclassical building dating from the 18th century. Another well-known element is the bridge that crosses the Francolí and serves to communicate the neighborhoods on both sides of the river.
The presence of the paper industry in Riba dates back to the Middle Ages. Throughout the territory of the municipality you will find paper and flour mills that follow the course of the Francolí and Brugent rivers. One of the best known is the Figuerola mill. It was built at the end of the 18th century and is one of the largest in the whole area.
La Riba stands out for being a town that offers many possibilities to nature lovers. You have paths and routes that you can do on foot or by bike. One of the most well-known is the GR 7 which reaches the Puig d'en Marc and from where you can enjoy exceptional views of the surroundings of the town.
On the other hand, there are also places to practice climbing. The best known is the Red Rock. It is about seventy meters high and was the seat of the world championship in 1987.
