The history of Escaladei has been linked to its Charterhouse. Currently, the monastery belongs to the Museum of the History of Catalunya. If you see one of the restored cells, you will be able to see first hand what life was like for the monks. Near the Cartoixa d'Escaladei you will find numerous hiking trails. One of the best known is the GR 171 that passes through the Font Pregona, a spring that used to provide water to the monks.
In its beginnings, the lands on which the Carthusian Monastery of Escaladei stands were ceded by King Alfonso I so that the Carthusians could repopulate their lands once the Saracen invasion was over. Throughout its history, the monastery has been expanded and has gone through several architectural styles. At the beginning, its style was Romanesque, later changing to Gothic. Unfortunately with the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1835, the monastery was abandoned and began a process of degradation. Thanks to the latest renovations, you can visit parts such as the church or the main cloister.
The topography of Escaladei has little relief, which makes it perfect for hiking. Throughout the town you will find several paths that will allow you to enter its agricultural fields and enjoy landscapes of great beauty.
