The first written documents of the town appear in the year 980. In the year 1229, it became part of the monastery of Santes Creus. Although agriculture is one of its main economic activities, the textile industry is also very important.
The natural surroundings of the Pont d'Armentera offer you the option of many outdoor activities. If you walk along the Gaià river you will be able to see an ecosystem of great value with numerous species of fish and aquatic mammals.
Many of the historic elements of the town are still preserved. In fact, the structure of its streets is that of a fortified town. One of the best known buildings is the baroque church of Santa Magdalena. You should also see the remains of the Femades bridge or the old castle of Salmellà.
The GR 175 passes through the Pont d'Armentera. It is a route that aims to unite the three Cistercian monasteries such as Santes Creus, Vallbona de les Monges and Santa Maria de Poblet. One of the highlights of this route is that you will be able to see throughout the route architectural elements of great historical value and you will also pass through natural environments of great beauty.
