The history of the Costa Daurada goes back to the Paleolithic era. Deposits have been found in the Cova de la Font Major or cave paintings in the Espluga de Francolí. However, with Romanization is when the Costa Daurada obtains a prominent position in the Iberian Peninsula. Tarraco, today's Tarragona, became the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis and one of the main seaports that traded directly with Rome.
The counties that are part of the Costa Daurada are Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Conca de Barberà, Tarragonès, Baix Penedès and Priorat. It has more than three thousand kilometers of coastline that goes from Cunit to L'Hospitalet de l'Infant. The beaches and coves are its main appeal. There are beaches for all tastes, from those very close to urban centers to those that are more secluded. You will also find beaches surrounded by pine forests or coves that can only be accessed via a footpath.
One of the most outstanding aspects of the beaches is the quality of their waters. Many have the blue flag and have facilities that offer all the security measures. Some of the best-known beaches are Platja dels Capellans in Tarragona, Cala Crancs in Salou or Platja del Torn in l'Hospitalet de l'Infant. The beaches of Cunit, Altafulla, Salou or Cambrils are also of great importance.
