The textile industry has been one of the main economic activities of Castellbell i el Vilar. Four textile colonies were built around the banks of the Llobregat river, which boosted the economic development of the municipality. Many were inspired by modernism for their construction. It is also worth seeing the Old Bridge, a construction from 1455 that maintains its medieval appearance.
The Hostal de Sant Jaume was a hostel that served as a stop for travelers going from Manresa to Barcelona via the rail road. It was also an important defense center and barracks for nearby towns during the French War. In the post-war period it was the scene of the maquis' actions. Currently, parts of the building and also a Romanesque hermitage from the 15th century are preserved.
Romanesque art has left a strong mark on Castellbell i el Vilar. Walking around its territory you will see Romanesque churches and hermitages of great historical interest. We recommend that you take the Romanesque route. It is a six kilometer route from which you can enjoy magnificent views of Montserrat. The most outstanding churches on this route are: Sant Jaume de Marganell from the 12th century, Sant Pere de Vilamarics from the 10th century or the monastery of Santa Cecília de Montserrat from the 10th century.
