The first settlement in the area dates back to Roman times. Its weekly market was already known in the 13th century. For All Saints, a tasting of chestnuts, sweet potatoes and mistela is held, as well as a theatrical show or a sweet contest. The town's commercial offer is one of its main attractions.
Calaf has an interesting set of twenty-five sculptures spread throughout its territory and which are a vestige of the international gatherings of sculptors that have been held in the town. Some of the most outstanding sculptures are Dual by Federico Gómez or Maternity by Ferran Alejandre. On the other hand, every Saturday the weekly market is held which brings together more than a hundred stalls. The Traditional Music Festival or the Fira de l'Eix are worth experiencing.
If you go around the old center of Calaf, you will be able to see a set of buildings and monuments of great historical relevance. The central point of the town is Plaça Gran, where the market used to be. Also of note is the parish church of Sant Jaume, a late Gothic building with one of the tallest bell towers in Catalonia. Very close to the shore you can see stately houses such as Casa Mensa or Casa Cortadellas. Don't miss seeing the convent of Les Llagues de Sant Francesc or the walls of the castle dating from the 11th century.
