We propose a journey through the main historical sites of the Battle of the Ebro, combining them with activities that you can also enjoy with your family, such as short bike routes, winery tours, or walks among vineyards and centuries-old olive trees. A trip among trenches, shelters, bunkers, ruined villages, and interactive museums that is enormously enriching, both from a historical and a tourist perspective.

The Battle of the Ebro was the longest and bloodiest confrontation of the Spanish Civil War, and a key episode that marked a turning point in the conflict between the Republican side and Franco's troops. Between the months of July and November 1938, the lands of the Ebro were the scene of a desperate offensive by the Republic, in which more than 100,000 soldiers fought in extreme conditions and over 30,000 lost their lives. Today, this territory not only bears the scars of those months, but has managed to transform them into spaces of memory, culture, and nature that invite reflection, but also active exploration of the landscape.

Corbera d'Ebre (Terra Alta)

The ancient village of Corbera d'Ebre is one of the most striking symbols of the battle. Converted into a front line, it was destroyed by bombings and was never rebuilt. Today, the Old Town retains its original layout and has become a space of memory. Among the ruins, the Abecedari de la Llibertat (Alphabet of Freedom) stands out, an artistic installation that fuses memory, language, and contemporary art. At the bottom of the village, the Interpretation Centre 115 Days offers a very comprehensive immersion in the events of the battle.

Extra suggestion: from Corbera you can take a short bike ride to Gandesa (about 8 km), following quiet rural paths through fields and vineyards. It's ideal for slightly older children or with a pushchair.

The Fatarella Devees (Terra Alta)

A few minutes from the village of Fatarella, this historic site of the Civil War preserves two lines of trenches, shooter wells, and a shelter, in the midst of a natural environment of great beauty. It has been rehabilitated and signposted to facilitate the visit and understanding of its historical value.

Extra suggestion: take the opportunity to visit some of the small wineries of the DO (Designation of Origin) Terra Alta, like Bàrbara Forés or Altavins, where tastings and family activities are offered among the vineyards.

Flix (Ribera d'Ebre)

Flix, in the heart of the Ribera d'Ebre, preserves several places related to the Civil War, such as the air raid shelter, the Memorial to the Republic or the Pontoners' Shelter. There is also a monument dedicated to the International Brigades.

Extra proposal: combine the visit with a walk or bike ride along the Towpath, next to the Ebro river, a flat and beautiful stretch to do with family. You can also go to the Flix Ferry Crossing, a traditional boat to cross the river. Children will have lots of fun.

The Camposines Memorial (La Fatarella)

Located on the outskirts of Fatarella, the Camposines Memorial, is a space for mourning and tribute to the missing combatants, built on an old trench from the Battle of the Ebre. The lookout offers a spectacular view of the Serres de Cavalls and Pàndols, key in the strategy of this battle.

Extra Proposal: from the memorial you can take a short walk to Coll del Moro, a natural lookout about 30 minutes long with spectacular views.

CEBE - Study Center of the Ebro Battle (Gandesa)

This center is essential to understand the historical and emotional context of the entire journey. It provides a comprehensive view of the political, military, and human context of the battle of the Ebro with a modern museum design, with original objects (weapons, documents, uniforms, field tools...), audiovisuals, interactive maps and testimonies that give voice to the protagonists of the battle. In addition, they offer guided tours, educational workshops and personalized recommendations depending on the available time and the interest of the visitor.

Extra proposal: after the visit, you can walk through the old town of Gandesa and stop for an ice cream or a vermouth on a terrace. It is also a good opportunity to visit the Gandesa Cooperative, a gem of agricultural modernism.

The Pàndols Range (Terra Alta)

Photo: Monument to Peace - Cota 705 (Pàndols Mountain Range)Photo: Monument to Peace - Cota 705 (Pàndols Mountain Range)

The Cota 705, also known as Punta Alta, is the highest point of the mountain range and was one of the most severe battles. Today, it is home to the Monument to Peace, built by the Association of Survivors of the "Quinta del Biberón" in tribute to the young fighters of both sides. The landscape is imposing and conveys great serenity.

Extra proposal: if you enjoy walking, you can take a short excursion to the peak from Coll de Pins, following the signposted route. It's an affordable walk, with good shade and stunning views.

How to do the route?

The best way to do this tour is by car, ideally spreading it over two or three days to enjoy it without rush. You can do it on your own, thanks to the good signage and interpretation centers, or you can sign up for one of the guided tours offered by companies like Terra Enllà, which provide a very enriching perspective.

And if you want to make the most of the experience, we recommend you stay in one of our charming rural houses in the area, where you can combine history with nature, gastronomy and rest.
