The tourist tax in Catalonia

What is it, what is it for and how is it calculated

When you book a house with Naturaki, the accommodation price does not include the tourist tax, an official tax set by the Catalan Government.

Next, we explain clearly what it is, how it is calculated, and why the amount can vary.

IMPORTANT:
✓ The tourist tax is a levy established by the Government of Catalonia.
✓ The rate applicable on the date of entry into the accommodation always applies, even if the reservation was made previously.
✓ In the event of a change in the amount by the Government, the total amount of the tax is automatically updated.

What is the tourist tax?

The tourist tax is a tax that is paid by anyone staying in a tourist establishment in Catalonia: hotels, campsites, rural houses, tourist apartments or tourist-use homes.

This tax is not set by Naturaki or the house owners, but by the Public Administration.

Tourist companies like Naturaki or the house owners simply collect it from the guests and transfer it to the corresponding administration.

What is it used for?

The funds raised by the tourist tax are mainly used for:
  • Promoting Catalonia as a tourist destination
  • Improving the tourist infrastructure of the area
  • Preserving natural spaces and heritage
  • Financing services related to tourism, such as the management of waste generated by tourists during their stays
The goal is to improve the quality and sustainability of tourism in the area.

Why can the amount vary from the time of booking?

The price calculated at the time of booking is indicative.

In the event that the Government of Catalonia or the municipalities (from 1st of October 2026) approve any update of the tourist tax or municipal charges, the amounts will be updated and automatically recalculated for all affected bookings according to the dates of the stay.

You will know the final amount at the time of check-in.

Tourist tax amount

Naturaki manages tourist use housing (HUT) and rural houses located in different regions of Catalonia.

According to the current regulations, applicable to all of Catalonia except the city of Barcelona, the rates are as follows:
 

From April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027

  • Tourist use housing: 1.75 € per person and night up to a maximum of 7 nights

  • Rural houses: 0.90 € per person and night up to a maximum of 7 nights

 

From April 1, 2027 onwards

  • Tourist use housing: 2.50 € per person and night up to a maximum of 7 nights

  • Rural houses: 1.20 € per person and night up to a maximum of 7 nights


Children under 16 years of age are exempt from paying the tourist tax

* Where applicable, VAT must be added according to current regulations.

Possible municipal surcharges

The regulations also allow municipalities to establish a municipal surcharge on the tourist tax.

This surcharge:
  • can be applied from 1st of October 2026 onwards
  • can vary according to the municipality
  • has a maximum amount of 4 € per person and night
  • must never exceed the base tax amount

Municipalities can also apply different amounts depending on:
  • the accommodation's postcode
  • the time of the year, to encourage off-season tourism
