Things about Vilaller that you will want to know when preparing your stay in a holiday cottage
The towns of
Vilaller and Senet have been documented since the beginning of the
12th century , although the first references to the
castle in the center of Vilaller are from the
14th century . The valley passed into the hands of the bishopric of
Lleida at that time.
According to a tombstone in the church of Santa Cecília de Senet, in
1632 there was an
avalanche of snow and stones that partially destroyed the town and in the 18th century a new church was built dedicated to Sant Clement, which has reached our days.
Spend a few days in a holiday cottage in the magical town of Vilaller
Vilaller has become the first Catalan municipality to enter the Magical Towns Network of Spain , an initiative that recognizes the actions carried out by a municipality in the areas of quality of life, town planning, heritage, the festivals and traditions, the gastronomy and other aspects that turn these towns into unique and "magical" places.
Vilaller already has several accolades, such as the declaration of Cultural Asset of National Interest for the medieval walled town , that of Vilas Florides (the second in the Pyrenees) or UNESCO's Intangible Heritage for the Falls of the Pyrenees .
Vilaller is also part of the Camino de Sant Jaume Aran-Pyrenees .
What can you visit in Vilaller from your holiday cottage
Vilaller offers many points of interest. We recommend a walk through the
alleys that made up the
medieval walled town and part of the
11th century wall and a visit to the
church of Sant Climent, a neoclassical temple that retains some element of the primitive Romanesque church inside. In the old town, the
birthplace of priest Anton Navarro , who was awarded numerous times in literary contests of the Jocs Florals, is also worth a visit.
Another element of interest is the bridge over the
Noguera Ribagorçana river, in Romanesque style and known as
Pont Vell de Vilaller. It is a construction from the 17th century that was partially destroyed by the
flood of 1963 . For a while, wooden footbridges over the collapsed bridge made it possible to cross the river, until a new bridge was built in 1964.
In the municipality of Vilaller there are several
hermitages , among which the ones of
Sant Antoni, the Virgin of Riupedrós and Sant Mamés stand out.
A curiosity of Vilaller is that its
cemetery is the only covered holy ground in the entire state .
Things to do in Vilaller, around your holiday cottage
The town of Vilaller has the first astronomical viewpoint in the Upper Pyrenees . This point incorporates a panoramic interpretive lectern and a North Star indicator pole. Peripheral villages in the National Park have been awarded Starlight certification by UNESCO in 2029.
The Obago path is a botanical route located in Vilaller. The path runs along the first part of the old Castanesa path, between the slopes of Riupedrós and Seu de Baix. It is one of the best preserved typical mountain paths (which had been used to communicate between villages) in the Berrabés valley. The quality of the cobblestones, the walls full of moss and the shade that accompanies the path guarantee a wonderful experience for a kilometer that lasts and along which you will find panels that inform about the most representative species of the flora of the valley.
The Fauna route is a 6.5 km circular route that starts and ends in Senet and runs along the side of the mountain following the old Port de Gelada road. The route passes through old cultivated fields and meadows, divided by small dry stone walls and is an environment very rich in fauna, where it becomes easy to discover the trail of the rabosa or the wild boar.
In Senet you will also find the Information Center of the Aigüestortes National Park , which sometimes hosts exhibitions and offers information on other itineraries that can be done in the vicinity of the town, such as the Lo Salto Waterfall (a spectacular jump of water of 120 meters) and the Besiberri valley and its lake, located at 1985 m altitude.
Villaller, where the tradition is born. What you can't miss...
Among the most emblematic festivals are
the descent of the falls (June 23), the Sant Urbà pilgrimage (May 25) and the Viacrucis de Setmana Santa (Good Friday).Les Falles , declared
Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO , are the summer solstice fire festival of the Pyrenees and
Alta Ribagorça. The fallas are resinous logs about two meters long that are prepared a few days before and lit from the Faro, a pine tree planted in a high and visible place, before starting the descent.
As for the
pilgrimage to Sant Urbà , Vilaller has always had a special devotion to this saint and has the "pilaret de Sant Urbà", where the town has been going on pilgrimage for a long time and where later, the City Council distributes bread and wine for everyone.
The
Viacrucis de Vilaller is a tradition that began in the 17th century, which traces the different episodes of Calvary from the church of Sant Climent to the hermitage of Riupedrós. It is one of the town's most deeply rooted traditions that finds its greatest expression in the celebration of the Good Friday procession.
