What you need to know about Seròs if you are staying in a holiday cottage
The fact that the Segre River passes through the municipality of Seròs is one of the reasons that these lands were already populated in ancient times, as happens along the course of the river through the rest of the lands of the Baix Segre, and proof of this they are the high number of
settlements and sites excavated between
Alcarràs and Granja d'Escarp, with those of Seròs being two of the most prominent.
After the conquest of
Lleida, Seròs passed into the hands of
Ramon Berenguer IV and Alfonso I. The fact of making a cession, instead of facing a battle, made it possible to maintain
Islamic culture . In 1212,
Aitona and Seròs were given to
Contança d'Aragó as a wedding gift to marry
Guillem Ramon de Momtcada , Seròs being linked to the
Barony of Aitona by the branch first of all of Montcada and then , of the Medianceli.
Seròs maintained a Muslim faith until 1526, but it was not until 1723 that the construction of the
parish church began, the works of which would end in 1745.
The life of the municipality changed a lot with the construction of the
Seròs Canal , favoring demographic development, cultivation and the construction of the Seròs hydroelectric power station.
The battle of Serós
The
bridge of President Francesc Macià was the only supply route between the rear of Seròs and the front line of fire during the Spanish Civil War. From April 22 to 27, 1938, the
battle of the lower Segre or the battle of Seròs took place. In November, the Republican troops led an offensive to push back the Francoist troops to recover Seròs, Aitona and
Soses, but in December, the Francoists attacked again in what would be the
main Francoist offensive against Catalonia . A tossal with
trenches and two bunkers remains from that time. The bridge still retains bullet impacts and resisted the intention to demolish it to prevent the advance of Franco's troops.
What things will you discover in Seròs from your holiday cottage
We recommend you stroll through the old town and you will discover some of the important houses from their origins such as the Palau dels Montcada , although they always had a residence in Aitona. You will also find the late baroque and neoclassical Parish Church of Santa Maria , from the year 1745. Bullet and shrapnel impacts from the Civil War can still be seen on the church's facade.
Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels of Avinganya
This is one of the first Trinitarian convents in the world and is part of the
Archeology Center of the Institut Ilerdencs Public Foundation of the Provincial Council of Lleida .
In 1201,
Pere de Bellvís gave the territory where the convent is today to the Trinitarians, specifically to
Sant Joan de Mata . It was a gift to thank him for freeing him as a prisoner of the Arabs. A year later, the church of the
first Trinitarian convent on the peninsula and the third in Europe was consecrated. The construction of the monastery was made using an Arab tower with a square plan.
When, due to an economic crisis, the convent passed into the hands of the daughter of the king of Aragon and wife of Mr. d'Aitona i Seròs,
Constança de Montcada , she established the family pantheon and a female community there that lasted until 1529. During this time, the convent was reformed and experienced a period of splendor.
Root of the plague that affected this region during the s. XVI, only two nuns remained and it was then that Pope Clement VII returned and in 1529 he established a male community. During this second stage of the monastery, the premises suffered a fire and some reforms were necessary, which were used to build a cloister there as well.
It is said that the origin of the name comes from the Arab lord
Yahya Ibn Ganiya , the owner of the land in the 11th century and an important figure in the Arab defense of Lleida.
Bovalar site
One of the most important sites recovered in Seròs is that of Bovalar, from the IV-VIII centuries. It has been possible to recover a part of an early Christian basilica and part of a village , which was abandoned by its inhabitants without taking practically anything due to a fire and leaving numerous household utensils for today's historians and archaeologists .
The territory of Lleida fed energy to Barcelona at the beginning of the 20th century
At the beginning of the 20th century and at the time when Barcelona was at the highest point of industrialization , Carles Emili Montañés , an industrial engineer from Barcelona, found an alternative to the consumption of coal to run the machines, which came from the Kingdom United and it was expensive. His proposal was to create hydroelectric power stations taking advantage of the flow of Lleida's rivers to bring energy to Basrcelona.
