Discover the municipality of Sant Ramón from your holiday cottage
The municipality of Sant Ramón is made up of the towns of
Sant Ramón, Portell, Gospí, Viver de Segarra and two uninhabited towns,
Mont-rós and Torre Majanell . It is located at the highest point in the Segarra region, on two plateaus (Pla de Sant Ramón and del Viver) which at the same time present elevations of land providing a very characteristic environment.
In Viver de Segarra, vestiges of an
Iberian settlement have been found and therefore it is known that the territory has been inhabited since ancient times.
Previously, Sant Ramón had received the name of
Manresana , for the homonymous cylindrical tower that marked the boundary between the county of
Manresa and the vegueria of
Cervera, in the 11th century. And there is evidence of the Manresana castle from the year 1030.
The town was set up along the road from Cervera to
Calaf, where the
monastery of Sant Ramón de Portell was located, and what was the core of Portell ended up adopting the name of Sant Ramón.
What can you visit in Sant Ramón while you spend a few days in a holiday cottage?
The town is formed by a very long street with the Manresana castle and the convent at its ends. The town center is presided over by the church and the monastery , both from the s. XVII-XIX, built on a mercenary monastery of the XIII century.
The Monastery of Sant Ramón, known for its architecture and dimensions as the Escorial de la Segarra, is organized around a neoclassical cloister from 1802. It was inaugurated in 1695, although the works were not fully completed until 1722. Of the whole Baroque ensemble, the church stands out.
It is well worth visiting Gospí , north of Sant Ramón, to see its castle , today a manor house attached to a medieval cylindrical tower, and the Romanesque church of Sant Martí .
On the other hand, in Portell, north-east of Sant Ramón, you will find the parish church of Sant Jaume de Portell, in the upper part of the town.
