The original name of the town was Sant Martí de Torroella until in 1981 it changed to Sant Joan de Vilatorrada. One of the best-known spaces in the municipality is the Cal Gallifa factory. It is an old textile factory that is part of the cultural heritage. In 1993 it was renovated to create a multipurpose room. Later, the cultural hall and the municipal library were added.
