Sorry, but we don't have any accommodation near Sanaüja
Like many of the other towns in the region, Sanaüja has its origins in the times of the Reconquest and is already documented in 951, when Count Urgell conquered the territory. The church and castle belonged to the bishopric of Urgell until 1835.
Of course, if you visit Sanaüja, the remains of its castle will not go unnoticed, which preserves an imposing five-eyed bell tower from the time when the castle was an episcopal palace, during the s. XVI and XVII.
Of the enclosed town, the medieval bridge , made up of two semicircular arches, and the Portelleta , one of the portals through which the town was accessed, stand out.
In the center of the village, you can visit the Parish Church of Santa Maria , in Gothic style (16th century) with some Baroque elements.
On the outskirts of the town, we recommend you visit the Convent and Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Pla , two adjacent buildings built in the 18th century on an old hermitage by the Augustinian order. Little remains of the convent, but the Sanctuary holds an image of Santa Rita that is highly revered in the region.
You can't miss the Sanaüja cemetery , which has 68 discoid stelae dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries and which trace a path to a small square, where the remains of Joan Marsal and Oliba, who died on September 11, rest of 1831. The marking of burials by means of the stele originates in the first millennium before Christ and will last for many centuries because it was the simplest and humblest way of burial. These stelae are being restored and you may find them accessible elsewhere in the town.
It is very interesting to go out to discover the iron source, located on the outskirts of the town in a space of great ethnographic value. The whole is very welcoming and well shaded and consists of the fountain, a waterfall and a recreation area with picnic tables and swings for the little ones. This water point became for many years the water supply point for the consumption of the population and receives this name because of its content in ferrous sulfate.
Part of the municipality of Sanaüja belongs to the Valls de Sió-LLobregós Protected Natural Area, offering tourists numerous opportunities for hiking and mountain biking . One of the routes we propose leaves the Canal del Riu path (4 Km. south of Sanaüja) and runs along the banks of the Llobregós river to end in the wetlands of Granollers de Segarra.
