In the past, the region was known as Pla de Mascançà. Its beginnings date back to the conquest by Count Ermengol IV d'Urgell. During part of its history it was under the control of different dioceses such as that of Vic or that of Solsona. During the Middle Ages there was a strong presence of Templars and Hospitallers. With the construction of the Urgell Canal in 1853, the region's economy gained momentum thanks to the development of agriculture.
