A town located in the center of Ripollès, in a mountainous area with magnificent peaks that rise in the Serra Cavallera Protected Natural Area. This is Ogassa, a municipality made up of small villages and scattered farmhouses connected by routes and footpaths.
During the Middle Ages, Ogassa was an important center of the Catalan textile industry. In those days, the town was made up of several factories and textile workshops, which took advantage of the hydraulic power of the area's rivers to power their machinery. In the 19th century, the textile industry experienced a great boom in Catalonia, and Ogassa became one of the main production centers in the region. During this period, numerous factories were built and an important working community developed in the town.
In Ogassa there are mainly three important points of interest: On the one hand, you can visit different Romanesque churches and hermitages, such as that of Sant Martí Surroca , from the 12th and 13th centuries; that of Sant Martí d'Ogassa , from the 10th century, located on the way to Coll de Jou; that of Sant Julià de Sator , built between the 11th and 18th centuries and, finally, that of the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Vidabona. It is also worth learning about the area's mining past. You can visit different old coal mines, such as La Dolça, located in Surroca de Baix, the main population center of the municipality, El Pinter, Ca l'Enric, Mina Nova, Mina Ramona or La Gallina. Or, directly, pay a visit to the Mines Museum of Ogassa. Ogassa, however, is also known for its fossil sites, such as the Open Cut of Can Camps .
Due to its geographical location, with large forests, grasslands and some fantastic peaks, one of the best activities you can do in Ogassa is, without a doubt, to explore the routes and trails that cross the municipality on foot or by mountain bike . You can, for example, do the summit of Taga , located in the Serra Cavallera and which reaches 2,035 meters of altitude. You will also find good walks and spectacular views on the Estela hill, the Coma d'Olla hill, the Pla de les Pasteres hill and the Portella d'Ogassa hill.
