The best balcony to see how the Catalan landscapes on both sides of the Franco-Spanish border come together in the Camprodon valley. This is Molló, a town in Ripollès that preserves a rural core surrounded by rich farmland.

The history of Molló and its surroundings

During the Middle Ages, Molló was a strategic point on the border between Catalonia and France. The town was under the jurisdiction of the counts of Cerdanya and was the scene of conflicts and territorial disputes throughout the centuries. In the twelfth century, Molló obtained the status of town and the castle of Molló was built as part of the border defenses. During this period, the town experienced a period of economic growth and development, thanks to its strategic location on the trade route between Catalonia and France. In the 17th century, Molló suffered the effects of the War of the Reapers and, later, of the War of the Spanish Succession. During these conflicts, the castle of Molló was destroyed and the town suffered material damage and human losses.

Get to know its architectural heritage

The old town of Molló has a rich heritage. At the entrance, the chapel of Sant Sebastià , with a side tower erected to thank the town for being freed from the plague epidemic in the Middle Ages. It is also worth visiting the Town Hall building, the laundry and the Old Fountain . Separated from the center, we find the Romanesque church of Santa Cecília and, a little further away, the church of Our Lady of the Snows of Espinavells, from the end of the 17th century.

Hiking and routes through Molló

One of the most attractive routes is to go to the Col d'Ares and climb the Mir tower, an old watchtower from where you will have spectacular views of France. You can also discover the neighborhoods of Fabert and Espinavell while taking a walk. Another activity is to follow the route of the numerous fountains that surround the area, or approach the oratory of Sant Pere or the Romanesque Riberal bridge, which is still in use.
