The lands of Granyena de Segarra became the property of the Count of Barcelona , who gave them to twelve couples with the aim of populating the area. In that moment. the castle of Granyena was already mentioned, under which the town began to be configured. Throughout history, the castle had many lords and, finally, in 1130, Ramon Berenguer II gave it to the Knights Templar, who established a fortress there to prepare for the conquest of Lleida. Once these were extinguished, it passed into the hands of the Hospitallers .

Visiting Granyena de Segarra involves passing through the ruins of the castle, which suffered significant deterioration as a result of the wars of Juan II, Succession and the Reapers. The castle dates from the 11th century and from the hill you have unbeatable views of the region. Among the ruins of the castle, the structure of some rooms and corridors can still be seen.

We advise you to take a walk along the main street of the village and discover among the houses the vestiges of the Middle Ages of the closed town . From this same street, a staircase leads you to the Parish Church of Santa Maria, an imposing neoclassical temple from the 18th century.

It is a baroque-style temple over the Romanesque, which is already documented in the 13th century, with a great tradition of pilgrimage.
