Do you remember the legend of Count Arnau? The feudal lord on whom the legend of this knight condemned for his sins to ride for all eternity is based, was born and lived in these regions. Spending a few days in Gombrèn will therefore allow you to fully immerse yourself in the world of knights and feudal lords of the Middle Ages.
Its history goes back to ancient times, with evidence of human settlements dating back to prehistory, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found in the area. During the medieval period, Gombrèn was a manor dependent on the Monastery of Ripoll. In those days, the town was made up of small agricultural holdings and some scattered houses around a parish church.
If you spend a few days in Gombrèn you can mainly visit religious buildings and castles. In both cases, you will have to walk for a while. At the beginning, it is worth approaching the sanctuary of Our Lady of Montgrony (17th century), the church of Sant Pere Montgrony, in the middle of a cliff that can only be accessed through the sanctuary or the church of Sant Martí de Puigbò , neoclassical style and located more than a thousand meters high. As for castles, you will find Sant Martí de Puigbò and Mataplana, known as Count Arnau's castle. The natural heritage is also noteworthy, where the gorge of the Banyuts stands out, the rock of the Gall or the hole of Sant Ou, or visit the museum dedicated to Count Arnau.
Do you feel like walking for a while? You can go on excursions around the area and get to know nearby towns, such as Montgrony, Aranyonet or Solanllong. Along the way you will find interesting places such as the Closos site, where a battle was fought between the Mataplana and the Saracens or the Banyuts gorge , where Count Arnau came out with his horse surrounded by fire. If you get close to the Montgrony sanctuary, you can practice adventure sports, hiking and climbing.
