The first settlers that the town had were the Arabs at the beginning of the 8th century. It was conquered by the troops of Guerau II in 1105. Throughout its history it has been the scene of battles such as the War of the Reapers, the War of Succession or the War of the French. From the center of the city , there are several paths that go around Balaguer and that you can do with a mountain bike.

Discover the old quarter

The old district of Balaguer is one of the few remaining Arab urban centers in Catalonia. Walking through its streets you will be able to see monuments and buildings that will transport you to its splendid medieval past. The facade of Carrer del Pont, the town hall or Plaça Mercadal, the nerve center of Balaguer and with dimensions of more than 7,000 square meters, is a must-see. You must also see the walls and the portals of Gel and Torrent. Another of the most emblematic buildings is the church of Santa Maria, a 14th-century Gothic-style building with an octagonal bell tower.

Balaguer has an important commercial activity. It highlights its weekly market that is held every Saturday and where you can see numerous stalls of local producers. On a gastronomic scale , the coca de recapte and samfaina are very famous. In fact, every year the Coca Festival is celebrated, an event in which a giant fundraising coke is made.
