Alta Ribagorça is a region, established as such in
1988 , inhabited since ancient times, although compared to the others, it is
one of the youngest in Catalonia . The so-called
County of Ribagorça was the first population center in the area in the 8th century, after Guillem de Tolosa controlled the territories of Pallars and Ribagorça. This county was established as independent from the Spanish Marca and changed hands throughout history (Navarra, Kingdom of Aragon and
Barcelona border).
