What are the Santa Tecla Festivities?
The Santa Tecla Festivities are much more than the main festival of the city of Tarragona. Declared a Heritage Festival of National Interest and also a Festival of State Tourist Interest, they are an unrepeatable combination of popular culture, religious events, civil rituals, shows, music and, of course, a very lively atmosphere.
Their history officially began in 1321, when Tarragona received the relic of the arm of Santa Tecla. That event was celebrated with grand acts and processions, initiating a festival that, with ups and downs, has been maintained to this day. Over the centuries, elements such as the Popular Procession, the human tower-building, the fire-beasts, and a host of rituals have been incorporated, which have become the emblem of the city. Today, Santa Tecla is one of the richest and most vibrant popular traditions in the entire country.

This year, the festivities will be held from September 15 to 24, 2026, with a program full of activities for all audiences and tastes. Some of the highlights of the program will include:
"Toc de Crida" and "la Tronada"
The "Toc de crida" (welcome call), with the reading of the proclamation from the balcony of the City Hall and the spectacular welcome thunderclap, will officially open the party. It's a moment of shared elation: people gather in Font square, the mayor lights the fuse from the balcony which will ignite the Eleven Mortars and the first thunderclap.
"Seguici Popular"
The Popular Procession is the folkloric soul of the celebration. One of the defining elements of the Santa Tecla Festivities. You'll find figures like the Devils' Dance, the Sant Roca Dragon, the Mulassa, the Víbria, the Serrallonga Dance, the Shepherds' Dance, among others. Their presence in the streets is synonymous with joy, dance, gralla music, and an energy that makes you vibrate. It's one of the most important and numerous processions in Catalonia and the Valencian Country.
Santa Tecla Castellera Day
There is no Santa Tecla without human castles. Tarragona boasts one of the most important human castle squares in Catalonia and four castle teams: the Xiquets de Tarragona, the Colla Jove Xiquets de Tarragona, the Xiquets del Serrallo and the Castellers de Sant Pere i Sant Pau. During the three castle days, the plaza de la Font becomes a stage of authentic epic, with castles that take everyone's breath away who gaze upon them.
"Correfocs" and pyrotechnics
The Correfoc, usually celebrated on the night of the 24th, is one of the most striking experiences of the Festes de Sant Tecla. Beasts and devils dance among sparks, drums, and an atmosphere that seems out of hell. If you go, wear old clothes and a handkerchief, and let yourself be carried away by the controlled chaos of fire.
Procession of the Arm of Santa Tecla
One of the most solemn moments is the Procession of the Arm, where the relic of the saint is taken out and carried to the Cathedral, accompanied by all the Retinue. This is a religious act, but also deeply symbolic for the city, which goes from the Cathedral to the Font square where a popular descent is celebrated.
