Stay in holiday rentals in Figueres

Figueres, the city of the Dalí Museum , is the capital and a municipality of Alt Empordà. The holidays rentals in Figueres are increasingly in demand by tourists thanks to its unique environment and its strategic geographical location: only 40 minutes from Perpignan and 15 from Empuriabrava, the nearest beach. The lodgings and rural houses of Figueres and the Alt Empordà are a very good option to enjoy the Empordà region in all its splendor.

Every corner of the city of Figueres is majestic: the emblematic Dalí Museum, the church of Sant Pere de Figueres, the immense 18th century Castle of Sant Ferran, the Empordà museum and the Toy Museum of Catalonia. All these locations and their people make the city of Figueres a very interesting place to discover through all the rural houses that you can find near Figueres .

Figueres and its rural surroundings

Coming from inland Europe, the first humans arrived in what we know today as Figueres around the year 1000 BC. However, the most relevant documents date to the year 943 with medieval Figueres, which is located on the hill of Sant Pere, in the north-east of the city.

In the population charter of Jaume I in 1267, Figueres went from being a small medieval town to a significant population. During the 18th century, Figueres again underwent a migration boom due to the French Revolution. With good news for agriculture and livestock in the area, the population continued to grow until today. Currently, although the primary sector has lost weight in the economy, tourism has gained momentum and means that many of the current population are able and willing to stay in Figueres. Salvador Dalí and Narcís Montoriol are two of the most prominent names in the capital that make it possible, in part, for Figueres to be what it is today.

What to see in Figueres during your holidays in our villas?

Visit the Dalí Museum in Figueres

The Dalí Museum is one of the most visited museums in all of Spain. For those who love Dalí's surrealism or simply for the curious, the Dalí Museum is a must-see in Figueres and in Catalonia, and receives more than a million visitors every year. The exterior of the building will not leave you indifferent: there are some large eggs on the top and hundreds of round loaves of bread on the red walls. Some of the works on display inside the museum are Self-Portrait with Humanity (1923), Port Alguer (1924), Portrait of Gala with two lamb ribs balanced on her shoulder (1933), Soft Self-Portrait with fried bacon (1941), The bread basket (1945) and Atomic Leda (1949).

Walk along the Rambla de Figueres

The Rambla de Figueres is probably the best-known pedestrian promenade in the Alt Empordà. Strolling along it, you will see some of the most beautiful modernist buildings in the city: Casa Salleres and Casa Cusí. Finally, at the end of the promenade, there is a monument to Narcís Monturiol, the inventor of the first submarine who was born in Figueres.

Visit the Sant Ferran Castle from the 18th century

Sant Ferran Castle is located on a hill very close to the city center, about twenty minutes' walk away. With more than 32 hectares, the Castle is not a medieval castle, but was a military fortress from the 18th century. It is currently open to visitors from ten in the morning to eight at night.

Go to the Plaça del Gra market

Nowadays, the Plaça del Gra holds a food market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and, on the third Saturday of every month: the Flea Market. The old commercial square was built in 1826 as a public market, and years later, Puig i Saguer built the unique iron, stone and tile porch of the square, which remains the same to this day.

Get lost in the Toy Museum of Catalonia

The Toy Museum is a must-visit if you are near the rural houses of Figueres. Suitable for both children and adults, it is one of the most important museums of this theme in the world. This space has more than 15,000 games, also from the last century, which will be a very good "plan" to get lost in its exhibitions and enjoy the atmosphere of a "childish" nature.
