The holiday cottages in Vic are a great option to discover one of the most beautiful regions of Catalonia, surrounded by nature, forests and mountains. Vic is located in a privileged part of the country, ideal for using the rural houses in the Osona area: less than an hour from Barcelona and less than an hour from Girona. Thanks to its fantastic location, tourism lovers are starting to make use of the holiday cottages in Vic or the tourist apartments in the city. Rural tourism in Vic is becoming an increasingly better option to enjoy the environment in a more integral way.
The town of Vic, located in the Osona region, offers thousands of activities and places to visit. Stroll through the historic center, enjoy the Jewish heritage, the Roman Temple of the 2nd century, the cathedral, the Episcopal Museum of Vic among other museums and art galleries in the city and attend the fairs that the city often hosts.
The city of Vic was founded in the 1st century AD by the Romans. However, Vic already existed for many years, since the ancient Iberian tribe of the Ausetans settled there, and made the current population of Vic their capital, and called it Ausa, the original name in latin.
In the 6th century Vic was named episcopal see, but the demographic and economic growth of the population did not reach the 18th century. The city grew and this fact favored the appearance of several sculpture and architecture workshops, and the construction of numerous well-known buildings, such as the current cathedral.
During the Carlist Wars, the city suffered an economic downturn and many industries moved to the Ter basin. A few years later, specifically in 1875 with the creation of the Barcelona-Vic railway, the city quickly recovered until today. However, with the arrival of the civil war and the Franco regime, social life in Vic was affected, as it was all over the country. During the last forty years, the city has been recovering its importance and weight: Vic has become one of the most important cities in Catalonia.
Plaça Major has been the commercial point of the region since time immemorial. Its arcades, the colors of the buildings and its large size make it an unusual place in Catalonia. After arriving at Plaça Major you can continue your tour of the historic center admiring buildings from all periods and styles that make up the rich architectural heritage that the city of Vic has to offer.
In the Museum of Leather Art you will find a collection of projects made entirely or partially with leather by the Vic tanner Andreu Colomer Munmany. Here you can admire and enjoy the technical and stylistic richness of the area. You will find trunks, screens, altar fronts, desks, bindings, bags, saddles, shields, containers, shadow theater figures or masks.
In the 11th century, the cathedral churches were founded among other buildings in the lower part of the historic center, near the river. Today, the neoclassical cathedral highlights the Gothic cloister built in the 14th century and the alabaster altarpiece by Pere Oller, in the same style. However, of all the buildings that were already there when it was built, today only the crypt and the Romanesque bell tower remain. The decoration of the mural in the central nave is also worth mentioning.
The region in general and the town of Vic in particular enjoy great natural and landscape wealth. In this way, in the surroundings of the city there are many possibilities to be in contact with nature. For example, the numerous mountain bike routes, roads, walking routes and balloon flights.
