Do you like nature? Do you want to enjoy the landscapes of Girona and the Costa Brava while biking? Girona and the Costa Brava have an extensive network of greenways where you can practice cycling and hiking. Many of these greenways are former railway routes that have been adapted and signposted for cycling.

The Greenways of Girona attract cyclists from all over the world every year! In Girona and the Costa Brava, you will find plenty of well-signposted routes ideal for walking or cycling, alone, as a couple, with friends, or with family. Put on some good sneakers, fill up your water bottle, charge your phone, and rediscover the regions of Girona on wheels.

El Carrilet (Olot - Girona - Sant Feliu de Guíxols)

Let's start with one of the most popular routes. El Carrilet route starts in Olot, in the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa, and follows the former route of the narrow-gauge train, reaching the beach of Sant Feliu de Guíxols passing through the city of Girona. El Carrilet route is divided into two sections: Carrilet I (from Olot to Girona, 58 km) and Carrilet II (from Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 41 km). It goes through amazing landscapes of great scenic importance. During the journey, you will pass through the Vall d'En Bas, below the castle of Hostoles, next to some of the best natural pools in the Planes d'Hostoles, through urban areas recommended for a short stop such as the old neighborhoods of Amer and Anglès, the city of Girona, and the meadows surrounding the greenway until reaching the beach of Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Both sections have very little slope. Most of the route is downhill, making it an ideal route to do with children. You can do one section each day. There are specialized companies that can drop you off at the starting point and pick you up (bicycles included) and take you back to the starting point to collect the cars.

El Tren Petit (Palamós - Palafrugell)

El Tren Petit (the little train) was a steam tram that connected Palamós with Girona passing through La Bisbal d'Empordà. This small tram made its first trip in 1887 and was in operation until 1952. Fifty-seven years later, specifically in 2009, the Greenway of El Tren Petit was inaugurated. A route that connects Palamós and Palafrugell, with secondary paths that reach some of the best beaches of Palamós such as Castell and la Fosca. A fantastic route to discover the Empordanet, as Josep Pla called it, cross the plain of l'Aubí, and discover the beach of Castell, a practically virgin beach integrated into the natural space of the castle of Cap Roig and located near the Iberian settlement of Castell. The route is only 6 kilometers long and is completely flat. It is an accessible route, of low difficulty, and therefore ideal for families with young children.

Thermal Route (Cassà de la Selva - Caldes de Malavella)

If you want landscape diversity and breathtaking panoramas, opt for La Ruta Termal (the thermal route). It has a distance of 14.8 kilometers and connects the greenway of Carrilet II (which goes from Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols) with the Via Augusta near the PGA Golf de Catalunya. Next to Cassà de la Selva. At the beginning, the first thing you will find is the Dall meadow, and from this point until you enter the urban center of Caldes de Malavella, you'll enjoy farmland, oak forests, and the plain of la Selva, from where you will have a breathtaking view of the massif of les Guilleries and the massif of Montseny. Once you arrive in Caldes de Malavella we encourage you to visit its Roman Baths. The thermal water is, as you will see, a symbol of the municipality's identity. This route, by the way, coincides with EuroVelo 8, a trans-European cycling route.

South Girona Plain Route (Fornells - Riudellots de la Selva - Cassà de la Selva)

Are you in the mood for cycling? The South Girona Plain route, 35 kilometers long, is an intermunicipal route that connects the municipalities of Fornells de la Selva, Llambilles, Campllong, Riudellots de la Selva, Sant Andreu Salou, and Cassà de la Selva, and includes various types of cycling paths. On the one hand, a shared green path with pedestrians and, on the other hand, a two-way bicycle lane, a protected bike lane in interurban areas, and a street in a 30-zone. It is a good opportunity to get to know the plain of Girona, the Gotarra and Verneda streams, an area surrounded by pines and oaks that separates the Gironès region from the Baix Empordà. The difficulty of the route is minimal. Ideal if you go with children with a certain experience.

Muga Natural Path (Sant Llorenç de la MugaCastelló d'Empúries - Empuriabrava)

This route, inaugurated in 2012, is divided into two well-differentiated sections: a greenway section and a mountain section. The first one starts in Empuriabrava and ends in Les Escaules. In total, about 18 kilometers accessible for bicycles, pedestrians, and adapted bicycles. The second section, the mountain one, is 11.5 kilometers long and goes from La Presa de Les Escaules to Sant Llorenç de la Muga. Keep in mind that the beginning of the section, which borders La Muga, is only suitable for walking. And that once you reach Boadella, you will start an eight-kilometer section with slopes exceeding 12%, and then a small section that, again, you can only do on foot because you will find stairs, rocky sections, etc. This route, by the way, is part of the network of Natural Paths of the Spanish state. In total is 41 kilometers long with a medium difficulty.

Pirinexus Route

If you prefer road or gravel biking, this is your route. Can you imagine biking from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava? If you are fit and passionate about sports challenges, we suggest you to do the Pirinexus route with a minimum of two days. It is a total of 340 kilometers long, 170 per day if you choose to do it in just two days. It goes from Girona to El Voló, in the Eastern Pyrenees. Ready? We will start from Girona, following the Carrilet route we mentioned earlier, towards Olot. Once you reach Olot, you will have to take the N-260 to Sant Joan de les Abadesses. In total, 22 kilometers. From there, you will go to the border with France, at the Coll d'Ares, at 1510 meters altitude. Once you enter French territory, you will start the descent to El Voló. The return to Catalonia will be through La Jonquera, and we will continue towards the sea, to the Costa Brava. It is a wonderful route to do with friends or as a couple. However, you will find some points with certain technical difficulty. You'll need to be prepared.
